Maya Bay, best known to movie goers as the shoot location of 2000’s The Beach, played by a famous American actor, Leonardo di Caprio, is to be temporarily closed due to excessive tourist numbers.

Maya Bay gets up to 5,000 visitors a day, with most tourists travelling by boat from Phuket or Koh Phi Phi. Such high numbers of tourists pose numerous threats to coral environments, placing greater pressure on delicate natural areas and ecosystems, thus the local authorities have decided to close it down for (3) three months in the low-season from  June to September 2018 to avoid further damage, to give its coral reef time to recover and preserve the natural beauty of the bay.
