It has been reported that a new eruption of Mt. Merapi in Yogyakarta, Java has taken place. This type of eruption is called a phreatic eruption which means steam and ash only, not lava.  This type of eruption is harmless and can happen anytime on active volcanoes.

Mount Merapi is located in central Java, about 25km north of Yogyakarta, and about 42km east of Borobudur.

The local authority briefly closed the airport in Yogyakarta due to ash, but re-opened again.
Tours to the Merapi area are temporarily closed for operation, though the main tourism attractions such as Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple and Yogyakarta city are all operating as per normal.
