The Terraces of Banaue (area declared a World Heritage Site) are, with an age of 2000 years, a real feast for the eyes, were carved into the mountains of Ifugao in the Philippines by ancestors of the indigenous peoples. It is commonly thought that the terraces were built with minimal equipment, mostly by hand. The terraces are located approximately 1500 meters average height and cover 10,360 square kilometers of the mountainside. Local people to this day still plant rice and vegetables on the terraces, although more and more younger Ifugaos do not find farming appealing, often opting
for the industry leaving the terraces. The result is a gradual erosion of the “steps” characteristic, which need constant reconstruction and care. Another problem is the drought, which can be represented in many erosion and destruction of some terraces, although large areas today are kept and maintained in favor of not losing this authentic world heritage. With the Spanish conquest, the town was called Villa Fernandina, in honor of Prince Ferdinand, the firstborn son of King Philip II of Spain. As the city grew, it was renamed the “City Fernandina de Vigan”, name that arrives today.
