The Strand Yangon
Declared “the finest hostelry East of Suez” by John Murray in his Handbook for Travellers written in the early 20th century, the 1901-built three storey 5 star hotel in Yangon remains one of Southeast Asia’s few grand colonial hotels and one of its most awe inspiring
Guests will have no trouble conjuring up Somerset Maugham inside these generous 55 square metre accommadations with polished teakwood floors below while ceiling fans whirl from high ceilings above. Perhaps he would have settled into a finely upholstered chair similar to the two in each Superior Suite’s sitting room, sun filled and finished with freshly cut flowers. Certainly he would be awed by the suite’s modern technology, cushy bedding, attentive butlers and the spacious bathroom with double sinks and a deep soak bathtub.
Noel Coward wrote some of his finest works in Asian colonial hotel rooms like our Deluxe Suite, each one a generous 60-65 square metres with polished teakwood floors below and ceiling fans whirling from high ceilings above. He might have sought inspiration by gazing upon Yangon from the oversized windows through which streams of sunlight flow into the separate sitting area and elegant bedroom with its hand carved wood frame beds and a tasteful selection of Burmese antiquities. Certainly he would have been impressed by the suite’s modern technology, attentive butlers and spacious bathroom with double sinks and deep soak bathtub.
While we named these three 65 meter riverside retreats for their professional endowments, our guests find plenty of pleasures here off the clock too. Step inside these first floor residences, upon polished Burmese teak wood floors under a soaring ceiling accented by colonial fans.
Sunlight streams into each corner suite through luxuriously oversized picture windows, making these suites our most romantic. The spacious living area suits a conference call as well as a relaxing break for afternoon tea, or an evening’s snuggle as the tropical sun sets.
Business travelers will appreciate the spacious workstation in the bedroom which features a plush king size bed. Marble counter-top bathrooms boast dual sinks and deep soak bathtub, a comfortable plus for globetrotting executives lucky enough to pack a partner with whom to share such timeless pleasures.
The Strand Suite
One of a kind and after more than one hundred years still the largest suite in Yangon, measuring 200 square metres . A hand carved four poster bed holds court in the bedroom on teakwood floors under the soaring ceiling. Beyond, sits the intimate study, finished with fine Burmese antiques. Light streams in through the tall windows, illuminating the tropical palm fronds and fresh cut flowers dappling the sprawling living room and cozy sitting room with lacquered cane chairs. The formal dining room seats up to ten, all of whom should be forgiven for sneaking off to glimpse the master bathroom’s gold plated fittings.
Soaring colonial ceilings, polished teak floors and Burmese antiques create a unique sense of place inside The Strand’s singular wellness enclave. Intimate yet spacious at 55 square metres, our one room spa can be yours exclusively or opt to share the unwind time together on two well padded massage tables. Highly trained therapists knead away jetlag, muscle aches and city stress with traditional Myanmar therapies
First impressions have been known to silence even our most well travelled guests at The Strand Grill which exudes history under its soaring vaulted ceiling with sparkling chandeliers and a skylight illuminating the elegant black & white marble floor. For casual gatherings, slide into a padded egg-cane rattan chair under whirling ceiling fans in The Strand Café with its endlessly entertaining views along Strand Road from grand teak framed windows. Friday evenings, stop in for Happy Hour at The Strand Bar, a longstanding Yangon tradition.
